FILM REVIEW- EXPERIMENTAL

GHOST ALGEBRA- Janie Geiser

RATING: 9/10

If I were to describe this film in three words, it would be: Unsettling animated art. Why?

This film discusses the origin of the word “algebra” which at first glance, doesn’t seem the most interesting topic, but on the contrary Janie Geiser makes this a captivating short, using colourful images and patterns. Patterns play a heavy effect in the creation of this film, as you can almost find a new pattern in every slide, throughout this film. The colours that incorporate the unique pattern create a storyline on a different level, because what might seem like a bunch of random “images” are actually detailed in what the story is trying to convey. Jane Geiser uses these images and pictures of inanimate objects in motion, to create this film that leaves you questioning what you had thought before. If you pause each frame there is a new dimension of precision, relating towards the images of a “plastic doll” or a “battle field map”. It’s very subtle, almost to the point where U had to rewatch it to comprehend the meaning on what Geiser was trying to portray. Overall, the “algebra” theme Geiser portrays seems to show in a variety of images throughout this film, and it left me wondering on what other orgins of other words really meant.
